Hundreds of Runners Get Set to Discover Leicester in a New Light

Hundreds of early morning runners are taking to the streets of Leicester City Centre on Friday 11th May for the Sunrise City 5K.

The event returns to Leicester for the second year with up to 500 runners expected to take part at the peculiar time of 5.30am on a Friday morning.

All participants will don the official orange and purple event shirt to run in, creating a wave of colour passing through the deserted city centre.

Event Director, Nik Emmonds said, “We’re thrilled to be returning to Leicester again this year after the success of the inaugural event in 2017.  The support that the city has shown for Sunrise City is fantastic and we’re delighted to see numbers double this year.”

Sunrise City 5K is a non-competitive run or walk designed to give people the chance to take part in an event without taking away from family time at a weekend.

The route starts and finishes in Victoria Park and heads out via New Walk to take in landmarks such as the Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower and Leicester Cathedral.

Nik continued, “Sunrise’s appeal comes from the fact that you get to take part in an event before the vast majority of people are even awake.  You get to see the streets and landmarks in your city when there is nobody else around and very little traffic on the roads.  For that small amount of time, the city is yours to explore.

“There are also studies that have shown that being active before starting your working day leads you to be more productive, which is reflected in the number of people taking part with work colleagues.  The non-competitive element means that we get a fantastic mix of people from those timing themselves on a fast 5k to those coming out for a morning stroll with their babies in a pushchair or to walk the dog.”

The event is supporting Vista, the leading local charity for children and adults with sight loss.  The charity, based on New Walk, have a large team taking part, including their Chief Executive Paul Bott,  and several staff, who will all be raising vital funds for the charity.

Kate Naish, Director of Income Generation at Vista said, “We are delighted to be the official charity of Sunrise City Leicester. It is a fantastic event and I am looking forward to joining our team of over 50 runners on 11th May. We would love to hear from others locally who want to join us”.
